Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010The Grand Central Art Center is currently staging a fundraiser to raise money for the Center’s ongoing exhibitions and education programs – 100 Artists See Satan features 100 modern artists doing their own unique take on the Devil. From the comical to the macabre, these pieces showcase Satan as the fallen angel, the malevolent trickster, and nearly every other aspect in between, giving us a unique look at the shapes that he assumes for our culture. All the pieces will be sold with proceeds going to the GCAC. Pieces from the collection can be purchased online as well at the fundraiser’s website. The show closes on August 15th.

3rd Eye Open Hip Hop Festival
Friday, July 23rd, 2010This past weekend was the 11th Annual 3rd Eye Open Hip Hop Festival, which is a celebration of urban music, arts, and design in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The goal of this festival is to unite and strengthen the local community through hip-hop culture. There were live performances as well as many live paintings.
Os Gemeos – “Don’t Believe the Hype”
Friday, July 16th, 2010Participating in MCASC’s Viva La Revolucion show opening tomorrow, Os Gemeos have created a large outdoor mural titled “Don’t Believe The Hype” to go along with their pieces in the show itself. The large mural is outside an above-ground parking lot, and is a great piece of work by the Brazilian twins.

Retna x American Association of Museums Convention
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010This is a recent project RETNA did with the AAM, American Association of Museums, and L.A. Art Machine at this years Museum without Borders conference. The “Wall of Ideas”, curated by Bryson Strauss, was an interactive painting between RETNA, Mear One and conference visitors. Additionally there was an open discussion about social, cultural, economic, and artistic challenges facing the country’s leading cultural institutions. Here are some photos from the event.
The Vader Project LA ReCap
Friday, June 25th, 2010The Vader Projects‘ Los Angeles opening party, artist signing and exhibition was a huge attraction for the residents of LA, and with due reason: this four-year art odyssey features 100 Darth Vader Helmets re-imagined by today’s most notable artists.
The tour came to an close in Los Angeles this month for a last ten-day exhibition in Hollywood as a preview to the upcoming auction in Philadelphia. The visit brought in an overwhelming crowd due to the opening party where a signing and exhibition was also held.

Madame Tutli-Putli

Fans of stop-time animation and awesome art direction should really check out Madame Tutli-Putli. This animated short was recently nominated for an Academy Award. Directed by Montreal filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, the film was produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Both parts are now on Youtube, check it out.
Pottok Prints

Artist Geoff Mcfetridge recently started his own wallpaper company called Pottok. Originally intended to be a liason between artists and retailers, Pottok now offers customers a chance to throw up their favourite designs on their walls. All of the wallpapers are hand screened in LA and printed on recycled paper, using water-based inks without the use of any chemical waterproofers, making them and eco-friendly decor choice.

Prolific LA graf artists AUGER and REVOK created an unsolicited collaboration with famous Japanese artist Takashi Murakami in LA last week. Although Murakami was not expecting it, word on the street is that he loved their “additions” and had the billboard shipped back to his Tokyo studio.

Looking Forward To Summer

Each year PS1 in Brooklyn opens up their courtyard to a design competition. This year’s winners have designed a layout that will turn the courtyard into a summer garden. New York Magazine details their inspiration for the summer occasion, where the designers site influences like urban immigrant gardening and the trend toward local food sourcing. We’ll be excited to see it in the flesh this Summer, when PS1 invites some great musicians and DJs to play in the courtyard at PS1 Warmup.
