Youth As We Know It

There is always something new and fresh going on in New York City. The Young and the Banging is a prime example of taking youthful college students and throwing them into the world of art and culture in an innovative way. Comprised the same way high school year books are made, The Young and the Banging is full of polaroid pictures, decorated “year book pages” and was published into a coffee table book. The entirety of the project is to document New York cities up and coming students and artists in a way that can be remembered forever.  To get a sneak peak at the book and place your order go to The Young and the Bangin.

Between owning and running several night clubs, it’s a wonder that the man behind Mr. A has any time to incorporate art into his life.  Hailing from Paris, Andre Saraiva has transcended into a world of global art and he has done it style and humor.  His signature gentlemen stick figure is featured here in a video with Lou Dillion dancing in the streets along to the Cazals.

Think of artwork as an artists thumbprint. Artwork can never be exactly duplicated which makes art both valuable and fascinating. These days, digital artists have managed to create their own fingerprints by using algorithms. By using these mathematical formulas, graphic designers are able generate unique images that are always different. To see more of this mathematical art, check out the website of interactive designer Erik Natzke.  Known best for his technological twists, Natzkie’s work (pictured above) will blow your mind.

New York Times photographer, Damon Winter, wanted to try photographing in a less objective manner. Twelve weeks later he came up with, “Neighbors”, a gorgeous juxtaposition of New York’s scenery captured on double exposed shots. The pictures above are essentially two images shot on one single page of film.  The project, which Winter says gave him a lesson in patience, results in a stunning collage filled with iconic New York sights.

Spray Paint 4.0

In the new digital world graffiti artists won’t need spray cans, taggers won’t need sharpies and artists won’t need canvases. But, you will need a pair of 3D glasses.  How is it done? Just ask world famous graffiti artist, DAIM, who unleashed his new project “Tagged In Motion” early in 2008.  The project offers a fresh new way of making graffiti by using technology and air. In this video, DAIM paints into an empty space using a virtual spray can, three cameras recording his movements and a bluetooth controller to adjust color, brush strokes, texture and size. Check out the video above to see DAIM in action and go to the DAIM gallery to view his other projects.

Francesca Lanzavecchia has turned function into fashion in the most interesting way.  While finishing her masters at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, she redesigned a line of neck braces, canes, crutches and back braces that can be used as chic alternatives to the ugly, sterile looking braces you would typically use.  The project, “Pro Aesthetics Support”, is both light-hearted and beautiful, transforming neck braces into necklaces, back braces into lace corsets and canes into something both useful and clever.

Come Together

Collaborations of epic proportions are being seen all around the world.  Fashion with technology, business with art, music with philanthropy- the possibilities are endless. Most recently, however, you see fashion teaming up with fashion in collaborations that result in things like Proenza Schouler for Target, Louis Vuitton for Commes des Garcon, Kate Moss for TopShop and most recently, Alber Elbaz teaming up with Stockholm based denim company, Acne Jeans.  The line is said to bring together the feminitiy of Lanvin’s couture with Acne’s masculine designs in a marriage of an entirely denim line made of the finest Japanese and Italian fabrics.  Made for girls and boys “about town of all ages”, the sure-to-be-a-hit line launches in November, but you can be certain there’s going to be a waiting list.

New iPod Nano Commerical

Its amazing what a little, 30 second commercial can do to cook up an internet frenzy for a band.  Apple, always on the cutting edge with technology especially related to music, just recently launched a  new commercial for the newest iPod Nano.  With its main feature being the myriad of colors one can choose from, their new commercial uses a poppy song from a Brooklyn based trio called Chairlift.  Within hours of the commercial surfacing there was a buzz all over blogs and Youtube.com.  As for the band, they don’t get paid directly from Apple, but the free publicity is priceless.

Hilbilly Tattoo

Look familiar? Well, it should. This tattoo by Pepper was designed after Peat Wollaeger’s Hillbilly for Green Label Art Volume 1. He was spotted in the September issue of International Tattoo Art. It’s good to see that GLA has such far-reaching (and permanent) influence!

Check out more of Wollaeger’s designs at stensoul.com.

17be961d7fad417b4c719973425e423f.jpg  Who doesn’t dread going to a hospital? They’re smelly, sterile and you can’t use your cell phone. And I guess the people at RXART.net felt the same way, because they’ve teamed up with some of the most respected artists to bring art into hospitals.  Not only has art been proven to relieve stress, but it definitely adds color and expression to a room full of wires and equipment. They’re constantly putting up new projects throughout the country, often focusing on children’s hospitals, to bring a little creativity to the world of medicine and healing.

Taking it to the streets.

writtenonthecity.jpg  Lately, the modern art world seems to be overtaken by graffiti and all facets of street art.  Abandoned buildings and busy streets have become canvases for aspiring artists, leaving their marks, sometimes in the form of political and social statements.  ”Written on the City: Graffiti Messages Worldwide” surveys the world in search of what goes on in the night and explores the illegal world of graffiti.  Aside from being a sweet coffee table book, it collects images from all corners of the earth allowing you to see cultural diversities among street writers.    Check out the website at www.writtenonthecity.com
